Welcome to Lancaster Yarn Shop's Class & Workshop Blog!

Lancaster Yarn Shop offers a variety of classes and FREE workshops for fiber artists of all skill levels, from Absolute Beginner to Extremely Accomplished. The emphasis is on celebrating the tradition of knitting and handwork (and learning cool new stuff!) in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Classes and Free Workshops are held at the Yarn Shop in our beautiful upstairs studio at 3519 Old Philadelphia Pike in Intercourse, Lancaster County, PA. (HERE for directions). There is plenty of free parking, and we are just steps from the terrific restaurants and great shopping at Kitchen Kettle Village. Classes are taught by our experienced and knowledgeable instructors and classified by skill level.

Sock Knitter's Seminar: Going Beyond the Basics with Carol Sulcoski!

Skill Level: Intermediate. You MUST know how to cast on, knit, purl, increase & decrease.  Prior sock knitting experience required.
Instructor:  Carol Sulcoski

Time:   10:00 - 12:00, 12:30 -1:30 (with a 30 minute break)

Premiering at VK Live this Fall, Socknitter's Seminar:  Going Beyond the Basics  comes to Lancaster Yarn Shop on Saturday, November 17th.    

You know the basics: now take your sock knitting to the next level. In this class, we'll cover techniques and tricks for making your socks spectacular, including adjusting patterns for fit; tips for working with self-patterning and handpainted yarns; different toe and heel styles; mastering kitchener stitch (grafting); and more. Students are expected to be familiar with the basics of sock knitting and are encouraged to ask questions they may have. 

We'll meet one time for 3 hours.

Carol Sulcoski is the author of Knitting Socks With Handpainted Yarns, co-author of Knit So Fine,and her third book –Sock Yarn Studio, patterns using sock yarn for items other than socks –  which will be available at LYS this fall.   Technical articles published frequently in Vogue Knitting.  Patterns have been published in Vogue Knitting, KnitScene, KnitSimple,  Knitty.com and various other publications. She also teaches at Vogue Knitting:  Live; Stitches; and local yarn shops.

Tuesday, February 28th: Dashing Mitts Free Workshop

Announcing another Free Knitting Workshop! Join us on Tuesday, February 28th for a Free Dashing Mitts Knitting Workshop.  We'll cast on and learn the basics of knitting a handsome pair of fingerless mitts in this two hour workshop.  Most of the knitting will be done on your own after the workshop.

Skills Required: You must have a basic understanding of most aspects of knitting and some experience knitting in the round.
Techniques Taught:  Knitting in the round with DPNs, basic cabling technique
Materials:  Two skeins Worsted Weight Wool, one set US#7 or 8 double-point needles,  split ring marker, cable needle (a double-point needle may be used if you have a set of 5; only 4 are used for this project),  and a tapestry needle.  Please download and bring your own copy of the pattern from knitty.com.

Tuesday, March 6: Welted Rainbow Blanket Free Knitting Workshop

Tuesday, April 3, 2012: Absolute Beginner's Workshop


This workshop is suitable for Absolute Beginner Knitters. Absolute Beginners are Future Knitters who have not yet put ‘yarn’ to ‘needle,’ have neither ‘knit’ nor ‘purled,’ and don’t know the difference between ‘casting on’ and ‘casting off.’   Also, perhaps, Former Knitters who may have forgotten it all (you know who you are!).  We’ll help you choose your materials and tools, and teach you to cast on, knit and cast off. 

Join us on Tuesday, April 3rd for an Absolute Beginning Knitting Workshop!  A friendly introduction to the absolute basics of knitting. Learn everything you need to make a simple, beautiful scarf.  This scarf is made using only the knit stitch!

Announcing another Free Knitting Workshop! Join us on Tuesday, March 27th for another Free Knitting Workshop.  We'll cast on and learn the basics of knitting for a baby or toddler with the very popular Saartje's Booties pattern.  These go pretty quickly, but you will need to do a fair amount of knitting on your own after the workshop.

Wednesday, April 4: Lace Ribbon Scarf Free Workshop

Join us Wednesday evening, April 4th for a Free Lace Ribbon Scarf Knitting Workshop.  We'll cast on and review the chart and lace pattern for this pretty Spring scarf.  Most of the knitting will be done on your own after the workshop.

Techniques Taught:  Lace chart reading, k2TOG, 2YO, SSK, etc

Materials:  Approximately 400-800 yards fingering weight yarn  US#3 circular or straight needles. Some knitters have made this pattern with dk weight yarn and larger needles, we'll talk about this possibility, too.  Please download and bring your own copy of the pattern from Knitty.com

Tuesday, April 10 & 17: First Time Sock Class


A First Time Sock Class! Join us on Tuesdays April 10th & 17th and learn to knit a sock!  We'll use a pattern that is just right for your first pair of socks.

Project:  Beginner’s Lightweight Socks by Knitting Pure & Simple
Date:  Tuesdays April 10 & 17
Time:  9:30a - 11:30a
Cost:  $35.00

Knit from the cuff down, this sock will introduce new sock knitters to basic sock construction.  Special techniques include heel flap, gusset decreases, and toe shaping.  

Materials:  100 grams/416 yards fingering weight yarn, US #2 double point needles, stitch marker, tapestry needle.
men & women

This workshop is suitable for Intermediate Knitters.  Intermediate Knitters are Current Knitters who know the basics:  long-tail cast-on, knit, purl, and bind off.  Experience working with double-pointed needles is a plus but not required.  This is an ambitious class & will require knitting at home.  We will review the whole pattern & all techniques, with particular attention to turning the heel.

The pattern & yarn for this project are available for purchase at LYS.  You may bring your own needles and tools for this project.
